A muslin blanket is a blanket made from layers of cotton gauze — a loose, open weave — stitched together at the edges rather than quilted through. The result is a blanket that breathes like a sheet and covers like a blanket, which is an unusual combination and the reason people go looking for them.
Most search results assume you mean a baby swaddle. Plenty of people do not. Here is what the fabric actually is, what the layer count means, and how to tell an adult muslin blanket from a nursery one.
What is muslin fabric?
Muslin is plain-woven cotton with a deliberately open, low-density weave. The gaps between the threads are the point — they let air move straight through the cloth.
Double gauze is muslin made in two fine layers, tacked together at intervals so the layers move as one. Four-layer muslin stacks that construction twice. The fabric crinkles naturally when washed, which is why muslin looks lived-in rather than pressed, and why it never needs ironing. Our guide to muslin fabric goes deeper on the weave itself.
What does 4-layer muslin mean?
It is the number of gauze layers stacked to make the blanket, and it is the single most useful number on the label.
- 1 layer. A muslin cloth or a light swaddle. Effectively see-through.
- 2 layers (double gauze). Clothing weight — dresses, robes, summer tops.
- 4 layers. Blanket weight. Enough substance to have some weight to it, still open enough to breathe.
- 6 layers. Winter weight. Warmer, slower to dry, heavier to wash.
Layers add weight and warmth without closing the weave, which is the trick. A four-layer muslin blanket weighs less than a knit throw of the same size but does not trap heat the way fleece does. Ours are all four-layer, in 100% organic cotton and OEKO-TEX® certified — see the muslin blankets for adults.
Are muslin blankets only for babies?
No, though that is where the fabric got its modern reputation. Muslin became the standard swaddle material because it is breathable and washes well — both of which are just as useful to an adult who sleeps hot.
The difference is size and layer count, not fabric:
- Baby and swaddle blankets are usually one or two layers at around 47 inches square — light enough to wrap without overheating. Ours are in muslin swaddle blankets and baby blankets.
- Adult muslin blankets are four layers at throw size — ours are 55 × 67 inches (140 × 170 cm), for a sofa, a bed layer or travel.
If you are weighing up whether one is right for you, are muslin blankets worth it covers the honest pros and cons.
Who is a muslin blanket actually for?
- Hot sleepers. The open weave lets body heat escape instead of building up under the blanket. This is the main reason adults buy them.
- Anyone in a warm climate. A muslin blanket is coverage without insulation — useful when you want something over you but not the heat that usually comes with it.
- Travellers. It packs to a fraction of a knit throw and weighs almost nothing.
- People with sensitive skin. OEKO-TEX® certification means the fabric, thread and dye have all been tested for harmful substances.
- Shoulder seasons. Too warm for a duvet, too cool for a sheet — that gap is exactly where muslin sits.
It is not the blanket for deep winter warmth on its own. Four layers of gauze will not do what wool does.
Do muslin blankets get softer?
Markedly, and this is the fabric's best quality. Cotton gauze starts a little crisp and relaxes with every wash — the crinkle deepens, the hand softens, and the blanket you have after six months is noticeably better than the one you bought.
Skip fabric softener entirely. It coats the fibres and closes the weave, which removes the two things you bought muslin for. Cold wash, low tumble or line dry. Full detail in our muslin care guide.
What size is a muslin blanket?
Adult muslin throws generally run 50 to 60 inches wide by 60 to 80 long. Ours are 55 × 67 inches, which covers an adult from shoulder to foot on a sofa and lies across the end of a bed. Baby versions are square, usually 44 to 47 inches.
For how that compares with other blanket sizes, see the blanket size chart.
Common questions
What is a muslin blanket used for?
Adults use them as summer bed layers, sofa throws and travel blankets. Smaller single-layer versions are used as baby swaddles, stroller covers and burp cloths.
Are muslin blankets warm?
Warm enough for most of the year, but not winter-weight. Four layers give real coverage while still letting heat escape — which is the point for anyone who overheats under a normal blanket.
Is muslin the same as cotton gauze?
Yes. Muslin is the older, broader name for loosely woven cotton; cotton gauze and double gauze describe the same cloth by its construction.
Are muslin blankets good for summer?
They are one of the few blankets designed for it. The open weave means you can be covered without being insulated, which is why they are a common alternative to a duvet in warm months.
How do you wash a muslin blanket?
Cold or warm gentle cycle, mild detergent, no fabric softener, tumble low or line dry. It will crinkle — that is the fabric working as intended, not damage.
