How to Fold Towels: Bath, Hand and Beach Towels Neatly

Folding towels well is mostly about deciding what you want: a stack that fits the shelf, a roll that looks like a hotel, or a hang that dries fastest. The methods below cover each. They work on any towel, though flat-woven Turkish cotton folds thinner and holds a crease better than terry.

One rule before any of them: fold dry towels only. A towel folded even slightly damp is how a cupboard starts to smell, and the fix takes longer than the fold — see how to remove mildew smell from towels.

How to fold a bath towel (the standard method)

This is the thirds-then-halves fold. It gives a flat rectangle with no raw edges showing, which is what makes a linen cupboard look tidy rather than full.

  1. Lay the towel flat, long side running left to right, label side down.
  2. Fold the top third down toward the middle.
  3. Fold the bottom third up over it. You now have a long band with the hems tucked inside.
  4. Fold the band in half, right to left.
  5. Fold in half again. The finished towel is a neat rectangle with one clean folded edge — turn that edge outward on the shelf.

On a bath sheet, skip the final fold. Five folds on a 39 × 70 inch towel makes a brick.

How to fold hand towels

Hand towels are folded to hang, not to stack, so the goal is a shape that sits evenly over a rail or ring.

  1. Fold in thirds lengthways so the towel is a long narrow band.
  2. Fold in half, bringing the two short ends together.
  3. Drape over the rail at the fold, so the two loose ends hang level.

For a stack instead, fold in thirds lengthways, then in half twice.

How to roll a towel like a hotel

Rolling suits a basket, a shelf without a door, or a bathroom too small for a linen cupboard. Flat-woven towels roll far tighter than terry.

  1. Lay the towel flat, short side facing you.
  2. Fold one long edge in by about a third.
  3. Fold the opposite edge in to meet it — a long band.
  4. Start rolling from the short end, keeping tension as you go. Loose rolls slump.
  5. Finish seam-side down so the roll holds itself closed.

How to fold towels to save space

Space is won by matching the fold to the shelf, not by folding smaller.

  • Measure the shelf depth first, then fold so the towel's width matches it. A towel that overhangs forces everything forward.
  • Stack in vertical files, not piles. Folded towels stood on edge in a basket let you pull one out without collapsing the rest.
  • Fold in thirds rather than halves where the shelf is shallow — three thinner layers beat two thick ones.
  • Keep sizes separate. Mixed stacks always end up rummaged through.
  • Buy flat weave. A flat-woven bath towel folds to roughly half the height of a terry one, which is the single biggest space saving available.

How to fold a beach towel

Beach towels are longer than bath towels — ours run 79 inches — so the standard fold produces something too long for most shelves.

  1. Fold in half lengthways, then in half lengthways again.
  2. Fold the band in half, short end to short end.
  3. Fold once more for a shelf, or roll from here for a beach bag.

Rolling is better for transport: it resists creasing and shakes sand out more easily than a folded towel does.

How should towels be folded on a rail to dry?

They should not be folded at all. Drying and storing are different jobs.

A towel folded double on a rail has half its surface pressed against itself, and the inner face stays damp for hours. Hang it open and full width, with air on both sides. Fold it only once it is dry.

This matters more with a bath sheet than a bath towel, simply because there is more of it — one of the practical arguments in bath sheet vs bath towel.

Common questions

How do hotels fold their towels?

Thirds lengthways, then halved twice, stacked with the folded edge facing out. The uniform look comes from folding to a consistent width, not from a special technique.

Should you fold or roll towels?

Fold for closed shelves and cupboards — it stacks more efficiently. Roll for open shelving, baskets and travel, where the look matters or the towel needs to resist creasing.

How do you fold towels so they do not fall over?

Match the fold width to the shelf depth and stack no more than five high, or stand them on edge in a basket. Towels topple because the stack is deeper than the shelf, not because of the fold.

Why do folded towels smell?

They were folded before they were fully dry. Cotton holds moisture in the fold long after the surface feels dry — leave towels on the rail a few hours longer than you think you need to.

How many times should you fold a bath towel?

Four for a standard bath towel, three for a bath sheet or a large Turkish towel. More folds than that and the stack gets taller rather than tidier.
