A gauze dress starts with the cloth. Cotton gauze — also called double gauze or muslin — is two fine layers of cotton tacked together for a soft, naturally crinkled texture that breathes on the hottest days. Our gauze dresses move easily from the beach to a slow evening, in calm, sun-bleached tones. Start with the cotton gauze slip dress or the gauze tunic dress.
Muslin Dresses in Double Gauze Cotton
If you came looking for a muslin dress, this is the same cloth under a different name. The softest of them are the ones cut closest to the fabric's natural drape: the sleeveless black muslin cami dress, the cream muslin maxi dress, and the green muslin strap midi. All three wash soft, pack flat, and get better the more they are worn.
Double Gauze Maxi and Midi Dresses
For warm days, the white and beige spaghetti strap midis layer easily over swimwear or pair with flat sandals. The black short sleeve midi dress and empire waist maxi dress keep daytime simple, while the black v neck maxi dress, the v neck maxi slip dress, the one shoulder dress, and the black spaghetti strap dress dress up for the evening. The relaxed scoop neck midi and the wide-sleeved beige and black gauze kaftans round out the easy, breezy shapes.
Cotton Gauze Shirt Dresses
For a more covered, button-front look, the striped midi shirt dress, the striped maxi shirt dress, and the belted tie front striped shirt dress bring an easy coastal stripe. The white and black crinkle cotton shirt dresses keep it solid and simple, while the black and white coral reef shirt dresses add a soft print — both easy as beach cover-ups or worn open over swimwear.
Matching Gauze Loungewear Sets
For off-duty days the collection also holds two-piece sets cut in the same double gauze cotton — beige, muslin, white, luxury, sage green, and black. They work the way the dresses do: cool in the heat, soft after washing, easy to pull on.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a muslin dress the same as a gauze dress?
Yes. Muslin is the older, broader name for loosely woven cotton; double gauze is muslin made in two fine layers. A muslin dress and a cotton gauze dress from this collection are the same fabric — the words are just used differently in different places.
What is cotton gauze (double gauze) fabric?
Cotton gauze, or double gauze, is made from two fine layers of cotton tacked together. It has a soft, naturally crinkled texture, an airy feel, and excellent breathability — light enough to wear alone on warm days and softer with every wash.
Are gauze dresses see-through?
Double gauze is two layers rather than one, so it is far less sheer than single-layer gauze. Paler colours read a little more open in direct sun, which is why several of the lighter styles here are cut with a slip or worn over swimwear.
Are cotton gauze dresses good for hot weather and the beach?
Yes. The open weave lets heat escape and air move, so gauze stays cool in the sun. The dresses pull on easily over swimwear and pack down small, which makes them natural beach and travel pieces.
Do cotton gauze dresses need ironing?
No. The crinkled texture is part of the fabric, so a gentle cold wash and laying flat or hanging to dry is all they need — no ironing required.
Which gauze dresses are organic cotton?
Select styles are cut in organic double gauze cotton; the fabric is noted on each product page.
