A throw is the one blanket size nobody agrees on. Bed blankets are sized to the mattress, so a queen blanket is a queen blanket everywhere. A throw is sized to a sofa, a chair, or a person — and manufacturers pick whatever suits their loom.
Here is the range you will actually find, and how to choose within it. If you are asking what a throw blanket is for rather than how big it is, start with what is a throw blanket.
What is the standard throw blanket size?
The standard throw blanket is about 50 × 60 inches (127 × 152 cm). That is the size most retailers default to, and it is sized for one person on a sofa — across the lap, or over the shoulders if you are not tall.
In practice the category runs from roughly 50 × 60 at the small end to 60 × 80 at the large end. Anything above that is being sold as a bed blanket even if the label says throw.
Our own throws sit at the generous end: the cotton throw blankets are 51 × 79 inches (130 × 200 cm), and the muslin blankets for adults are 55 × 67 inches (140 × 170 cm). Both cover an adult properly rather than reaching the knees and stopping.
Throw blanket size chart
| Size | Inches | Centimetres | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small / lap throw | 40 × 50 | 102 × 127 | A chair, a child, a car |
| Standard throw | 50 × 60 | 127 × 152 | One adult on a sofa |
| Large throw | 55 × 67 – 51 × 79 | 140 × 170 – 130 × 200 | Full adult coverage, foot of a bed |
| Oversized throw | 60 × 80 | 152 × 203 | Two people, or a single bed |
How long should a throw blanket be?
Length matters more than width, because length is what decides whether your feet stay covered.
- Under 5 foot 6: 60 inches of length is usually enough.
- 5 foot 6 to 6 foot: look for 67 to 80 inches.
- Over 6 foot: 80 inches, or accept that your feet will be out.
- Sharing: width becomes the constraint — 60 inches minimum for two people.
What size throw blanket for a sofa?
Match the throw to the sofa, not to the person, if the blanket is going to live there.
- Armchair or reading chair: 50 × 60. Anything longer pools on the floor.
- Two-seat sofa: 50 × 60 to 55 × 67, draped over one arm.
- Three-seat sofa: 51 × 79 or larger, so it reads as a deliberate layer rather than a folded rectangle.
- Across the back of a sofa: the throw needs to be at least as long as the sofa is deep, twice over.
What size throw blanket for the foot of a bed?
For a decorative layer across the end of a bed, the throw should be a little wider than the mattress so it hangs evenly on both sides.
- Twin bed (38 in wide): a 50-inch-wide throw hangs about 6 inches each side.
- Queen bed (60 in wide): 79 inches of length laid crosswise gives roughly 9 inches of drape each side.
- King bed (76 in wide): a standard throw will not span it. You want a bedspread size — see our full blanket size chart.
What is an oversized throw blanket?
An oversized throw is roughly 60 × 80 inches (152 × 203 cm) — about the footprint of a twin mattress. It is the size to buy if two people share it, or if you want one blanket that works on the sofa and as a light bed cover.
The trade is weight and storage. An oversized throw in a heavy knit becomes a two-hands blanket; in a lightweight cotton gauze it does not, which is why our four-layer muslin blankets can run large without becoming a project to fold.
Does throw blanket size affect warmth?
Only through coverage. Warmth comes from construction — layers, weave density, fibre — not from dimensions. A four-layer cotton gauze throw and a single-layer woven throw of identical size behave completely differently.
What size does change is airflow. A blanket that is too small gets pulled tight and pressed against you; one with a few inches to spare traps a layer of air, which is what actually keeps you warm without overheating.
Common questions
What is the most common throw blanket size?
50 × 60 inches (127 × 152 cm). It is the default across most retailers, though premium throws are often larger.
Is a throw blanket big enough for a bed?
Not as the main cover. A standard throw will lie across the foot of a bed or cover a single sleeper loosely, but it will not tuck or drape on a double or larger. For that you need a bedspread size.
What size throw blanket for a queen bed?
Laid across the foot, a throw of 79 inches or longer works well on a queen. As a full cover you want a proper queen blanket at around 90 × 90 inches, or a queen bedspread.
How big is a large throw blanket?
Around 55 × 67 to 60 × 80 inches. Ours run 51 × 79 and 55 × 67, both sized so an adult is covered from shoulders to feet.
What size throw for two people?
At least 60 inches wide, and 80 inches long. Below that, someone ends up uncovered.
