A Turkish towel, traditionally called a peshtemal or hammam towel — is a flat-woven cotton towel that originated in Ottoman bathhouses. Instead of terry loops, the cotton is woven flat and finished with knotted fringe, which is why it's thinner, lighter, and dries far faster than a conventional towel. The fringe isn't decorative: it's the warp threads, hand-knotted to stop the weave from unravelling.

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and tumble dry low, or hang dry to protect the fringe. Wash before first use — a new Turkish towel feels crisp until the first wash opens up the weave. Skip fabric softener and dryer sheets entirely; they coat the cotton fibers and are the single most common reason a Turkish towel stops absorbing.

Wash it separately the first time or two — the dyes are colorfast, but new cotton releases a little excess dye and loose fiber. After that it goes in with anything, as long as you keep it away from zippers and hooks that can snag the weave.

I bought the bath towels for my family. They are amazing quality, soft thick cotton. Obviously not full of lint, and they won’t leave your body wet as you’re trying to dry yourself. The tasselled ends are lovely.
My husband began fussing immediately that we don’t have anything as nice at home (despite my purchase of “luxury” towels last year, as they left lint all over for the first few washes), so I’m going to have to make a second order for his Christmas gift. 😉
