Why wash muslin before first use?
1. Manufacturing residue. New textiles carry traces from production and finishing — sizing agents that stiffen fabric for cutting and sewing, plus handling residue from transit and storage. None of it is dangerous, but it sits on the surface and it doesn't belong against skin.
2. It blocks absorbency. That same residue is why a brand-new muslin cloth beads water instead of soaking it up. One wash and it works properly.
3. Shrinkage happens on your terms. Muslin settles 3–5% on the first wash. Better that happens in your machine than after you've cut it, hemmed it, or measured a cot for it.
4. It's the softness unlock. Muslin out of the packet feels crisp. The character people love — the relaxed, broken-in softness — arrives with the first wash. Judging muslin before washing it is judging the wrong fabric.
Do you have to wash muslin before using it on a baby?
Yes, without exception. Newborn skin is thinner and more permeable than adult skin, and a swaddle spends hours pressed against it. Wash before the first use, every time, including gifts and hand-me-downs.
For baby muslin specifically:
- Fragrance-free, dye-free detergent. The gentlest one you can find.
- Wash separately from the household load the first time.
- No fabric softener, no dryer sheets. Both leave a chemical film that defeats muslin's breathability — the exact property that makes it safe for swaddling.
- Warm cycle, 30–40°C. Hygienic without being harsh.

How should you wash muslin the first time?
1. Wash it alone, or with the same colour family — dyed muslin can release a little colour on the first cycle.

4. Air dry or tumble low, then shake it out while warm.
Expect it to come out slightly smaller, noticeably softer, and a little more crinkled. That's the fabric arriving at its finished state.
