Most towel disappointment is a sizing problem, not a quality problem. A bath towel that will not wrap all the way round, a beach towel your shoulders hang off, a hand towel bought at bath-towel width — the fabric was never the issue. Towel sizes are not standardised the way bedding is, so two towels sold under the same name can differ by a foot.

What is the standard bath towel size?
A standard bath towel is about 27 × 52 inches (70 × 132 cm). That is the size most department stores and hotels default to, and it is enough to dry an adult without being enough to wrap comfortably.
The range in practice runs 27–30 inches wide and 52–58 inches long. Anything wider than about 35 inches is being sold as a bath sheet, whatever the label says.
Our own Turkish bath towels are cut at 39 × 70 inches (100 × 180 cm) — generous by American standards, and closer to a bath sheet than a standard bath towel. That is deliberate: a flat-woven Turkish towel is thin enough that the extra size costs you nothing in bulk.
What are bath sheet dimensions?
A bath sheet is roughly 35 × 60 inches (90 × 150 cm), and larger sizes run to 40 × 70 inches. It is a bath towel with about 40 percent more surface area — enough to wrap under the arms and tuck, which a standard bath towel usually will not do.
Bath sheets take longer to dry and take up more space on a rail, which is the trade. With a lightweight flat weave the drying penalty is small; with thick terry it is real. We have written a full comparison in bath sheet vs bath towel.
What size is a hand towel?
A hand towel is about 16 × 28 inches (40 × 70 cm), sometimes 16 × 30. It hangs beside a sink for drying hands and is the towel most often bought in the wrong size, because a guest towel and a hand towel are not the same thing.
- Washcloth or face cloth: 12–13 inches square (30–33 cm). For washing, not drying.
- Fingertip or guest towel: 11 × 18 inches (28 × 46 cm). Decorative, for a guest bathroom.
- Hand towel: 16 × 28 inches (40 × 70 cm). The everyday one beside the basin.
What size is a beach towel?
A beach towel is typically 30 × 60 inches (76 × 152 cm), and oversized versions run to 40 × 80 inches. The point of the extra length is lying down rather than drying off — a towel you can stretch out on without your feet in the sand.
Ours measure 35.5 × 79 inches (90 × 200 cm), which covers a standard sun lounger end to end. Length matters more than width here: 60 inches leaves most adults short.

Which towel size should you buy?
- You want to wrap, not just dry. Bath sheet, or a generously cut bath towel at 39 inches wide or more.
- You have a small bathroom or a single rail. Standard bath towel. A bath sheet will not dry properly folded on a narrow rail.
- You are packing. Flat-woven Turkish cotton in any size, because thickness rather than dimension is what fills a bag.
- You are buying for a lounger. At least 70 inches long. Width is comfort; length is whether it works at all.
- You are buying for a guest bathroom. A hand towel plus fingertip towels, not two bath towels.

Does towel size affect how fast it dries?
Less than weave does. A large flat-woven towel will usually dry faster than a small terry one, because terry holds water in its loops while a flat weave lets air pass straight through. Size matters mainly once the towel is on the rail — a bath sheet folded double on a narrow rail stays damp in the middle, and damp is where mildew smell starts.

No. A bath sheet is a larger version of a bath towel — roughly 35 × 60 inches against 27 × 52. Same purpose, more coverage, longer drying time.

Do towels shrink after washing?
Cotton towels shrink around 3 to 5 percent in the first wash or two, mostly in length. Buy for the size you want after that first wash rather than the number on the label.
